PS3 Hacker going to Prison | Is it fair?

Analysis: Did The PSN Outage Hurt U.S. PS3 Hardware Sales?

[As part of his monthly analysis of NPD Group’s U.S. physical video game retail sales estimates, Gamasutra analyst Matt Matthews examines how the weeks-long PSN outage affected PlayStation 3 hardware sales.]

In mid-April, Sony discovered traffic on its PlayStation Network that was eventually revealed to be an unauthorized intrusion that gave access to consumer data. Once the intrusion was detected, administrators took down the servers to avoid further damage.

The network, including online multiplayer gaming, was partially restored on May 14, 2011, and fully restored in many territories, including the U.S., by the first of June.

Sony’s compromised, disabled network was widely reported on during this time and we wondered whether sales of the PlayStation 3 hardware, software, or accessories would suffer as a result. After all, free multiplayer gaming – a feature Sony has often touted as an important part of its product – was completely disabled for approximately one month.

Looking first at hardware, the simple fact is that Sony’s hardware sales have been decreasing since they peaked briefly back in February. It would be difficult to discern without finer-grained data whether the network outage was responsible for PS3 sales declining in April and in May, since sales were already going down in March. The figure below demonstrates this.

UNCHARTED 3: Naughty Dog Talks Multiplayer

By now you’ve probably read the full details of what you’ll get with UNCHARTED 3’s upcoming multiplayer beta. Now, in our new video interview, Naughty Dog’s top developers reveal just how deep this rabbit hole goes. At a glance, UNCHARTED 3’s most obvious multiplayer enhancement lies in its sweeping character customization options in the form of weapon loadouts, gun mods and a wide selection of ability-enhancing Boosters. You’ll be able to modify your character’s appearance in almost every way, whether you want to slap some aviators on Nathan Drake or cobble together a custom hero or villain from scratch. “There are hundreds and hundreds of parts and every part has a customizable color,” Game Director Justin Richmond tells us. “You can look the way you want to look. We want it to feel personal.”

PlayStation Network Finally Coming Back Online

The PlayStation Store remains inaccessible, but online play is back

After more than three weeks of downtime, Sony has begun bringing the PlayStation Network back online.

Earlier today, a firmware update (v3.61) was released that forces users to change their PSN passwords. Out of security concerns for PS3 users, this password reset has to be done through a PS3 system that your account was activated on. If you’ve never downloaded anything on your PS3 before, you’ll need to change the password through an e-mail sent to the e-mail address attached to your PSN account.

Sony Expects PSN Services to be Fully Restored by May 31, 2011

Today Bloomberg (linked above) reports that Sony expects PSN services, including Qriocity, to be fully restored by May 31, 2011.

To quote: “Sony Corp.’s PlayStation Network and Qriocity online services remain shut as of today, Shigenori Yoshida, a Tokyo-based spokesman said. Sony is uncertain when it can resume the services, Yoshida said by phone today.

The company is in the process of adopting an improved security system and its plan to restart the services fully by May 31 is unchanged, he said. Sony shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services April 20 because of possible data theft by hackers.

The maker of PS consoles had planned to restart partial operations within a week after boosting the level of security system, the company said May 1.”
